We all know that YouTube chapters are a game-changer. They help your viewers jump to the exact part of the video they need, improve your “Watch Time” by reducing frustration, and even help your videos rank better in Google search results.
But let’s be honest: manually scrubbing through your video to find the exact second every new topic starts is tedious. It can take 30 minutes to an hour just to organize a single video. Luckily, there is a much faster way to automate this entire process using ChatGPT.
Why Use YouTube Chapters?
Chapters act as a “Table of Contents” for your video. When you add them, YouTube breaks your video progress bar into segments, making the content much more digestible. Since Google often displays these segments directly in search results, having accurate chapters is one of the easiest SEO wins you can get for your channel.
Step 1: Extract Your Transcript from YouTube
You don’t need to write down what you said—YouTube has already done the work for you.
- Upload your video: Even if it’s set to “Unlisted,” YouTube will generate a transcript.
- Open the Transcript: Below your video, click the “More” (three dots) icon and select “Show Transcript.”
- Copy the Text: Highlight the entire transcript from start to finish and copy it to your clipboard.
Step 2: Let ChatGPT Do the Heavy Lifting
Once you have the transcript, head over to ChatGPT. This is where the automation magic happens.
- The Initial Prompt: Paste the transcript and ask: “Can you create YouTube timestamps or chapters based on the following transcript?”
- Refining the Results: Sometimes ChatGPT provides too many chapters. You can refine it by being specific. For example: “Only give me timestamps for the 10 different apps I mentioned.”
- Formatting: To make it look professional in your YouTube description, ask ChatGPT to: “Put minutes and seconds at the beginning, followed by a brief title for the chapter.”
Step 3: Paste and Publish
Once ChatGPT gives you the list, do a quick sanity check to ensure the times align with your video. Then, simply copy the list and paste it into the Description box of your video in YouTube Studio.
As long as your first timestamp starts at 0:00, YouTube will automatically turn those lines of text into interactive chapters on your video.
Final Thoughts
By using AI to handle the “boring” parts of content creation, you can spend more time actually making videos and less time on administrative tasks. What used to take an hour now takes less than two minutes.
