If you’ve been using CapCut on your PC lately, you might have noticed a frustrating change. Starting with versions 4.9 and 5.0, CapCut began introducing watermarks on exports or limiting users to just one free “watermark-free” export per month.
For creators who rely on this slick, intuitive editor, this is a major roadblock. While many videos online offer complicated “hacks” that don’t actually work, there is a very simple, engineering-based solution to get your clean exports back permanently.
The Problem: Why Did the Watermark Appear?
CapCut recently updated its monetization model for the desktop version. In the past, you could export as much as you wanted for free. Now, the software tracks your exports and essentially “locks” the watermark-free feature behind a subscription or a very strict monthly limit.
The Solution: The Downgrade Method
The most reliable way to bypass this limitation is to use a version of the software that was released before these restrictions were implemented. By installing a specific older version, you can regain unlimited, watermark-free exports.
Step 1: Find the Right Version
You want to look for CapCut version 4.0.1. This is widely considered the “sweet spot” version—it’s stable, has most of the modern features you love (like auto-captions and basic AI tools), but it doesn’t enforce the export watermark.
- Search Google for “Download older version of CapCut PC.“
- Look for reputable archive sites.
- Ensure you are downloading version 4.0.1.1818 or slightly earlier.
Step 2: Installation
You don’t actually need to uninstall your current version of CapCut first.
- Download the 4.0.1 installer.
- Run the installer and let it install “over” your current version.
- Once finished, open CapCut. Your existing projects and templates should still be visible in the library.
Step 3: Verify the Export
To make sure it worked, bring a simple clip onto your timeline and hit the Export button. In the newer versions, you would see a warning about “one free export remaining” or a Pro watermark toggle. In version 4.0.1, those warnings should be gone, allowing you to export a clean video immediately.
Critical Cautions: Read Before You Downgrade
Before you make the switch, there are two things you must keep in mind to avoid losing your work:
- Project Compatibility: Projects created in very new versions (like version 5.4) may not be backwards compatible. If you have a complex project currently in progress, finish and export it before downgrading, as you might not be able to open that specific file in the older version.
- Say “No” to Updates: CapCut is very persistent. Every time you open the app, it will likely prompt you to “Upgrade to the latest version.” Do not click update. If you update, the watermark restrictions will return immediately.
Summary
Removing the CapCut watermark isn’t about finding a “crack”—it’s about choosing the right version of the tool for your needs. By sticking with version 4.0.1, you can continue to use one of the best free editors on the market without the annoying branding.
